CAMR APPLAUDS CONGRESS FOR PASSING STEM CELL RESEARCH ENHANCEMENT ACT
-- Group Leads Nation’s Appeal to President Bush to Sign Bill into Law -- WASHINGTON, D.C.; JUNE 7, 2007 – At an event today in the U.S. Capitol, Coalition for the Advancement of Medical Research (CAMR) president Sean Tipton joined patients and their families as well as scientists and others in the medical community to thank the leadership and members of the U.S. House and Senate for their strong bipartisan support and passage of the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act.
“In passing the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act (S. 5) today, the U.S. House of Representatives showed a true sense of bipartisanship and gave great hope to the American people who rely on the promise of what embryonic stem cell research will provide,” said Sean Tipton, president, Coalition for the Advancement of Medical Research. “Now it is up to President Bush to do the right thing and sign this bill into law. We gave him the language he said he needed to support this legislation, and America is ready for him to do the right thing,” added Tipton.
More than 100 million Americans suffer from cancer, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, spinal cord injuries and other debilitating diseases and disorders for which embryonic stem cell research holds great promise in finding new treatments and cures. Those individuals, along with their families, friends, and caregivers now have a renewed sense of hope that there will one day be federal funding for embryonic stem cell research.
“On behalf of CAMR, I would like to thank the effort of the leadership in the House and Senate, as well as Senators Harkin, Specter, Kennedy, Hatch, Feinstein, and Smith, and Representatives Castle and DeGette for their unfailing dedication to this issue, and to this particular legislation again in the 110th Congress. We would also like to thank every Senator and Congressperson who voted for this bill. Your stamp of approval speaks volumes to the millions of voters across America who believe in the hope that embryonic stem cell research provides.”
