CAMR APPLAUDS U.S. SENATE FOR PASSING STEM CELL RESEARCH ENHANCEMENT ACT The following statement may be attributed to Sean Tipton, president, Coalition for the Advancement of Medical Research (CAMR) of Washington , D.C. :
“In passing the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act (S. 5) today, the U.S. Senate gave great hope to the American people, and took a much-needed step to secure our nation’s leadership in the fields of science and medicine. Because S. 5 differs slightly from H.R. 3, we look forward to working with Speaker Pelosi to get this version of the bill through the House.
“Today’s passage of the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act in the Senate clearly shows strong bipartisan support toward this bill one day becoming law.
“More than 100 million Americans suffer from cancer, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, spinal cord injuries and other debilitating diseases and disorders for which embryonic stem cell research holds great promise in finding new treatments and cures. Those individuals, along with their families, friends, and caregivers now have a renewed sense of hope that there will one day be federal funding for embryonic stem cell research.
“On behalf of CAMR, I would like to thank the bipartisan effort of Senators Harkin, Specter, Kennedy, Hatch, Feinstein, and Smith for their unfailing dedication to this issue, and to this particular legislation again in the 110th Congress. We would also like to thank every Senator who voted for this bill. Your stamp of approval speaks volumes to the millions of voters across America who believe in the hope that embryonic stem cell research provides.”
